Give Me Liberty

Don't tell me what I've got to think or say.
That's none of your damn business, anyway.
Don't tell me now I need security;
There's only one thing you can do for me:

Give me liberty
Give me liberty
Give me liberty
Give me liberty

I'm not afraid of foreign enemies
They cannot take away my liberties
I'm not afraid of things that they might do
From what I see, I'm more afraid of you.

Give me liberty
Give me liberty
Give me liberty
Give me liberty

Bridge:

You hide behind the flag but here's a fact:
I see right through your phony patriot act.
I think it's time you finally figured out
What my America is all about:

Liberty
Give me liberty

Give me liberty
Give me liberty

Don't tell me how it's all for my own good.
I'd tell you where to shove that if I could.
I'll say this just one time so get it right:
I won't give freedom up without a fight

Give me liberty
Give me liberty
Give me liberty
Give me liberty

Bridge:

It's in the hoofbeat of a horse running wild;
It's in the heartbeat of a newborn child;
It puts the hope in every dream we dream;
And when we've got it we've got everything:

Liberty
Give me Liberty

Give me Liberty
Give me Liberty

Don't tell me what I've got to think or say
That's none of your damn business, anyway
Don't tell me now I need security
There's only one thing you can do for me:

Give me Liberty
Give me Liberty
Give me Liberty
Give me Liberty

Give me Liberty
Give me Liberty
Give me Liberty
Give me Liberty

Give me liberty... (repeat)

The promise of this land
We hold it in our hands
It's time we make a stand
Stand up for Liberty!

It's been our dream so long
The one thing that makes us strong
You know we can't go wrong
As long as we have Liberty

It's like a beacon bright
That shines through the darkest night
We'll make it home all right
If we follow the light of Liberty

You can keep your security
Try to show some integrity
Just give me Liberty
And I'll do all the rest myself

Homeland Security Blues

They're readin' all my mail - They listen on my phone
They're sneakin' and they're peekin' - and I'm never quite alone
They're spyin' and they're pryin' - but I shouldn't be alarmed
They're only gonna do it - to keep me safe from harm

(They call it) Homeland Security
So they can do the things they do
But I'm not feelin' any safer.
How about you?

They don't need a reason - they don't need a rhyme
They don't need a warrant - they don't even need a crime
It's all for my own good - if liberty I lost
Now they're kickin' down my door - makin' sure I really floss

They call it Homeland Security
To get away with what they do.
But I'm not feelin' any safer.
How about you?

Bridge:

They're makin' up a list and they make 'em fast
If you get on a list then, Buddy, it's your —
They're goosin' and they're steppin' and they're dressed in black
Boy, you better not be readin' no Farmer's Almanac

They call it Homeland Security
They should do time for what they do (real time, real hard, hard time)
I'm not feelin' any safer.
How about you?

Bridge:

Poor little Johnnie flunkin' out of school
A future flippin' burgers man and that ain't cool (that ain't cool)
Johnnie's got no morals, only half a brain
Now he's the one decidin' just who's gettin' on the plane
If that's Homeland Security -
Then we're all in doggy-do (doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo)
I'm not feelin' any safer.
How about you?

Homeland Security - It's a sham.
Homeland Security - It's a-one big scam
Homeland Security - Yeah, real good plan
They call it Homeland Security
Homeland Security

You say this cat Bush is fascist mother-f—
Hush your mouth!
Well I'm talkin' 'bout Bush.
Then we can dig it.

Homeland Security
Homeland Security...

REPEAT AND FADE OUT

Never Strike the First Blow

My old man was a bad guy
Never did much but make us cry
He worked like a dog; he played some cards
Got in too many fights and he drank too hard

I guess my old man was a bad guy
But I never knew him to tell a lie.
He took and sat me down one day
And this is what I heard him say:

(Chorus:)

Son, never strike the first blow
Don't assume what you don't know
Protect the weak and the lost and low
And never strike the first blow

Maybe I ain't one who should give advice
But before you cut once better measure twice
There ain't much else I really know
Never strike the first blow.

(Bridge:)

I hope your life will be better than mine
I did what I thought was right, son — at the time
My leavin' now is best for all concerned
But before I go, I'll tell you what I've learned

Don't give abuse and don't ya take none
Don't bring a knife when you need a gun
When you love somebody let it show
And never strike the first blow

Now don't you take no orders from no kind of man
Stand up and think for yourself — do the best you can
Do your fightin' fast and your lovin' slow
And never strike the first blow

(Bridge:)

Now he's gone - Now I'm grown
Now I've got sons - of my very own
Before I soon - send them on their way
There's a couple of things - I want to say:

chorus

REPEAT AND F.O.

At The Ritz

(Chorus:)

Don't get me wrong, don't string me along
Don't fill my head full of lies.
I don't need that kind of attention
Just keep my glass filled high.
I believe I'm gonna see better days
'Cause I'm not the kind that quits.
I'm still alive and I'm gonna survive
I'm just takin' five at the Ritz.

At night I play 'cause I work all day
To make some other guy rich.
I know it's true, but to give him his due
He's one smart son of a —
Betcha I got some dreams for the future;
I gotta hold onto 'em tight.
They may never come true, but, baby, after a few
I begin to believe that they might.

chorus

I loved a lovely lady.
Ah, love we love to say.
But this ain't a song about love gone wrong
And she's long gone, anyway.
When I can't stand the way I am
Just because she's not around
My arm still bends, with my proven friends
I'm gonna drink that heartache down.

chorus

Now, I'm givin' up wine, women and song.
What do you think about that?
I can tell by the way you're lookin' at me
You think I'm talkin' through my hat.
But I'll betcha anything I can do it.
So, buddy, spread the word around.
Never more will I sin, and that's gonna begin
Just as soon as they nail the lid down.

chorus x 3

Take me home, now...

There Ain't No Cowboys Anymore

He likes to call himself a cowboy
Likes you to call him cowboy, too.
He likes to call himself a cowboy
But that don't make it true.

He ain't never done a lick o' work
His daddy always seen to that.
But he bought hisself some cowboy boots
And he bought hisself a cowboy hat

I don't know much about too much
One thing I know for shore
If that's what passes for a cowboy,
There ain't no cowboys anymore.

He treats men like he owns 'em
He treats women like they're whores
He likes to kiss up to the rich
He likes to kick around the poor

He don't think lyin' is a sin
He don't think cheatin' is a crime.
He'll do anything to win.
And he should be doin' time.

I don't know much about too much
One thing I know for shore
If that's what passes for a cowboy,
There ain't no cowboys anymore.

Bridge
A real cowboy's word is good as gold.
A real cowboy'd never harm a child.
A real cowboy's easy on the earth,
Loves everything that's free and wild.
A real cowboy never starts a fight.
Always stands up for true and right.
And he don't ever hate no man
For the way God made him in His plan.

He likes to call himself a cowboy
Likes you to call him cowboy, too.
He likes to call himself a cowboy
But that don't make it true.

I don't know much about too much
One thing I know for shore
If that's what passes for a cowboy,
There ain't no cowboys anymore.

Bridge: (instrumental break a la Foggy Mountain Breakdown, Flatt & Skruggs)

He likes to call himself a cowboy
Likes you to call him cowboy, too.
He likes to call himself a cowboy
But that don't make it true.

I don't know much about too much
One thing I know for shore
If that's what passes for a cowboy,
There ain't no cowboys anymore.

I don't know much about too much
One thing I know for shore
If that's what passes for a cowboy,
There ain't no cowboys anymore.

Movie Queen

It was rainy and cold on a Friday night
I'm a stranger in town and alone
Got tired of sitting cooped up in my room
Hoping that someone would phone

So I went for a walk down a murky side street
That the chamber of commerce denies
Past head shops and ladies of pleasure
Where soon I would find my life's treasure

It was a little storefront with a small neon sign
That flashed on and off and on again
I casually entered and strolled down an aisle
Past anonymous rain-coated men

There were booklets and films and magazines
On every conceivable sin
And people who'd got in positions
They might never get out of again

And in the back was like a row of confessional booths
Shoulder to shoulder they leaned
I slipped into one and I'll tell you the truth
Here's what I saw on the screen

A wild-eyed raven-haired beauty
Who appeared to be havin' quite a time
She exhausted the entire cast and crew and their friends
And I wish she were mine

So won't you lend me a quarter or two
If you do I'll be your true friend
I've fallen in love with a movie queen
And I just want to see...

(inst break)

Ah, that girl she loved every inch of her work
She was kind to her animal friends
With Dick she was happy with Jane she was gay
A candle she yearned at both ends

Now I've never gotten to meet her
I don't know her number or name
But there can't be a girl any sweeter
And I love her so just the same

But we only meet on those dark dead-end streets
I date her a coin at a time
She's ruined me for other mere mortal young things
I'm hers 'til the end of all time

So won't you lend me a quarter or two
If you do I'll be your true friend
I've fallen in love with a movie queen
And I just want to see...

Hey, won't you lend me a quarter or two
If you do I'll be your true friend
I've fallen in love with a movie queen
And I've just got to see how it ends.
